Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that General Motors has made some horrible decisions that have lasted over a decade in relation to ignition switches in their cars. You’d think then, that they would be extremely careful moving forward to issue a recall immediately after confirming issues with their vehicles.
Unfortunately, that may not be the case. The newer issue that GM shelved (in striking similarity to how it handled it much more serious issue) shows that they likely haven’t learned any lessons other than maybe how to handle extremely negative PR situations.
An issue with many GM models (including the 2010, 2011, and 2012 Camaros) is that the power drivers seat bolt that holds the height position of the seat will slowly loosen and if not adjusted can fail and cause a sudden drop from the drivers seat to its lowest position. GM previously considered this simply an annoyance and not a safety concern. I’d argue that depending what the driver may be doing at the point in time of failure, this could be much more than a nuisance, and could be quite dangerous.
GM had noticed the loosening of the bolt in 2013, and that is the point in time they labeled it an annoyance for customers, but not a safety issue. At the point in time they investigated, 27 claims were found. I imagine the numbers who fixed it elsewhere or on their own would balloon this number much higher.
Fast forward to one week ago (July 23, 2014), GM announced 6 safety recalls, and the power seat is included. Admitting that there are plenty of layers of red-tape that likely hold up a recall process, it is still simply inexcusable that it took over a year to issue a recall to fix this. Given their recent history, it is disconcerting to see that it is still hard for GM to handle situations like this professionally.
The optimist in me believes something will change, but they’re going to have to prove it to me, and millions of others who are wondering what the hell they’ve been thinking as of late.
