93 LT1 High Idle and no spedometer

My 93 lt1 idles in park and neutral at about 1500 and in drive at about 11-1200. It was doing this everyone in a while and now it is doing it constantly. Whenever it wasn't i would just be driving then suddenly Rpms drop and my spedometer goes out and I get a check engine light. I don't have an obd1 scanner an I tried the paper clip trick to see the code but could not get it to work any ideas?

Electrical ignition switch or the connection to it might be failing.

Not saying this isn't at all because I have no clue, but why does this failing cause the engine to idle so high?

Totally unrelated.
The switch suggestion is for the cutting off issue.

Make sure you don't have a vacuum leak. There are many things that can cause high idle. Having the codes will make diagnosing the issue much easier.

If you can't find a vacuum leak then it could be your (IAC) Idle Air Control. My 95 ran 1500 in park and 1000 in drive. I traced all the hoses and never found any leaks. I learned open and closed loop and replaced all of the sensors and finally found out about the IAC and now it idles perfect.
