How do you know if you have a bad flywheel

Think mine is ****ed up when I stop sometimes i have a bad vibration on the shifter and when i let off the gas at about 70mph during the slow down when it gets to 60-65mph it vibrates bad (not pressing the brake). Please help, 97 Trans Am Bone stock LT1 Automatic transmission 147k miles

Wll your car has a flexplate not a flywheel for starters. A vibration at idle can be a number of things, most likely is worn motor mounts. At those slow down speeds is right about the time DFCO kicks in when close to being 100% off the throttle. Its part of the tuning but its retards the spark timing and allows the engine to help slow you down. At any rate it would still be worn motor mounts or trans mount. Given the miles on your car I wouldn't be surprised if the motor and trans mounts are shot.

Yea i just did sum research and found out i dont have a flywheel its called a flex plate lol but yea i won't doubt tht the trans and motor mounts are shot tho cuz when goin slow and i can really feel the mounts are not in good shape but im reading forums on the flex plate and idk it sound about right tho

Regardless, I would change the mounts before digging deeper into this. Could be the cheap fix you're looking for. If it doesn't solve it, like you said, they are most likely shot anyways.

But I mean would mounts cause the ruff vibrations at start up it vibrates real bad on the shifter, the whole console in the middle vibrates bad

Yeah. Theres 2 motor mounts and one trans mount. You would have to really effin try to damage the flex plate... Like have massive power, improperly shimmed starter, loose crank to flexplate or torque converter to flexplate bolts.

On tht note my car does need a crank kit cuz it has low oil pressure, the bearings are bad but it drives fine and the pressure only drops at idle when warm and when it drops down to zero it still sounds fine

LT1 right? they are common to run with low oil pressure at idle, If your crank bearings were bad it would knock, but it is possible I suppose for that to attribute to a vibration, but you would feel that vibration all the time.

Yea. And that's what I heard someone tell me but i replaced the oil pump and pick up with a high velocity one an its still low, so low the check gauge light comes on while at a light lol and I replaced the oil pressure sensor and switch but like u said the car would vibrate all the time and it doesn't do tht

gm specs say that 6 psi is the min for a lt1 and they are known to run low oil preasure.also since they do run lower oil preasure the internals run hotter causing regular oil to break down so synthetic is needed.as long as the psi goes up by 10 for every 1k rpn the emg is running ur fine.

Yea when im driving around town its in the middle it fluctuates depending on how hard how i hit the gas and yea it does get a lil hotter at idle its sum ware pass half i hate tht so im changing the thermostat and the waterpump i wonder what can i do to keep it cooler than normal

And I also hear tht if u have any oil leaks synthetic is not the way to go is tht true LoL!

synthetic doesnt break down thermaly as quick thats why its used in racing.if u change the t stat to like a 160 degree u need to get the fans retuned to cut on at like 190 cause factory they come on at 226 and 235 low n high speeds

people say that but ive never had any issuse.its said that the sludge from old oil clogs leaks and that the additives from the synthetic will eat the sludge but i dont belive it and if its leaking its easier to just fix it than have to put a quart in once a week.

synthetic hm would do a better job lubing it than reg oil cause of the heat.also the ecm needs tuned to turn the fans on earlier.speed shop or poss a reg one can do it.
