my engine is making a nasty knocking sound I can hear something hitting against my valve covers and i get very low oil pressure when i drive around and its my first car. Do you guys think I should keep it and try to fix it myself or sell it?
well nobody is going to want to buy a car with a bad knock, and even if they did that would be kind of shady to sell someone a car that you know has a problem (possibly even illegal check your lemon laws)
im not going to say I know what would cause your problem, but I would start with the oil pump, make sure it is working and getting oil where it needs to be, also are you over heating? that can cause low oil pressure and then your engine will knock like crazy from it getting no oil.
my first thought is that if someone is loose and bouncing around inside your valve cover/cylinder head than it would have already caused a catastrophic failure and your engine would have seized on you. Let us know whats goin on!
it did over heated once I put in a new water pump and hasn't over heat sence the engine still starts and runs and the body is in great shape. I was thinking about pulling the drivetrain and selling it as a roller
can you tell if there is water in the oil or even oil at the top of the radiator if it sits for a while? Maybe a compression cheak to see if you have a bad vavle. I would leave the motor in if you were selling. A motor is cheaper to rebuild somtimes than it is to replace if its missing. Sell it as a package. but figure out whats wrong first so you can tell the buy whats broke. Just my thinking, good luck
You've never seen a car run with a broken camshaft? Hm, must only happen where i'm from. I've also seen them run with a broken crankshaft, or does that only happen here to.:tard: But seriously, the first thing to check, is to make sure its not just a push rod, rocker arm, or rocker arm stud.

Anyway you should just take the valve cover off and check the rocker arms and the studs... it could be a rocker arm coming off of the bolt or maybe even a pushrod. I have a hard time believing it would still run under any of those conditions, but you should check and see because there are only so many things under those valve covers.
X3 on the push-rod, or rocker come lose. good luck, i've never seen an engine run with a broken camshaft/crankshaft either. did not know that was possible.
ok guys I'll pull the cover off tomorrow but I won't really know what I'm looking at, but I'll let you know what I see under there. I'm only just know learning about cars. My stepdad said he's not going to help me fix anything he hates LT-1's
I really dont want to start a pissing match here, but before you guys start bashing someone for their input. I think you might want to get your facts straight. Dont take my word for it, google the phrase (camshaft broken still run). If Im wrong I will deffinately admit it. I was a mechanic for 15 years, 7 of those were with John Deere. In that time there were product improvements on 8.1L diesel engines for broken crankshafts. I fixed over 20 of these problems myself. Almost all of them drove into the shop.

OK I was wrong about the cam as far as inblock cams go. But not the crank.:hang:
