I have a 1994 z28 with 74000 miles and in the last couple weeks it has started to smoke a lot while idling and gets worse while accelerating. I took it to a mechanic I know in town that's pretty cheap with small garage and he said he thinks the piston oil rings are bad but he didn't really check anything just did a leak down test! So today I took it to a mechanic with a bigger shop who put it on the lift and the front crank seal has oil all over it and it's sprayed all down the bottom of the motor and he said it looks like there's oil around the header on the driver side! So he's going to fix the front seal and the gasket. Would this be the problem for it smoking so bad or could the first mechanic be right about the piston oil rings?

How long since the PCV valve has been cleaned or replaced?
They will and the tubing for them carbon up and clog and not let the crankcases ventilate which will force oil past gaskets and seals
74,000 miles Is really low for an LT1 to be smoking from oil rings
I bought one from advanced auto and put it in about a week ago but it was pretty loose and didn't fit properly so I took it back out and put the old one back in

If this mechanic has never worked on an LT1, I'd be a little iffy about him working on it.
