would any of these issues keep a 97 LT1 from running

it starts, runs for about 5 seconds then dies, will start again, I hear the fuel pump priming.

Car had after market alarm which I removed and may have missed something

battery with a possible dead cell
no alternator
no coolant
fuel level fine
no check engine codes
smog pump not hooked up yet

Like I said fires right up then dies 5 seconds later then will start again as easily.

I'm surprised it starts with no alternator. Why is there no coolant? I would connect/hook everything up before I would try starting it.

There's alot of alternatorless cars driving around the track that start just fine
But as ercmann said you shouldn't be trying to start the car without everything hooked up

I have definitely started a car without the serp belt on before. It started and ran. I've also driven cars down the road with serp belts blown off. Had to get the car from the customers house to the shop. Pulley froze, so couldn't put a belt on.

JeffP what the heck you have going? Is the engine original to your car or is it a swap?

I was heading from where I live now in Arkansas to NC, where I did live at the time. All's I know, when my SS's alt went out at 70+ mph on I-40 in NC, my car died. I was 70 miles from home. I tried to restart it several times, it wouldn't even turn over. So coasted to a stop. Called for a tow truck. To truck driver told me that late model vehicles are designed to shut down when the alt takes a shit. Tow truck driver towed me to the nearest auto parts store. I replaced the alt right there in their partaking lot. Turned in the core. Started my car and drove the 70 miles to home. And alt has been fine since, that was almost 4 years ago. Ok, so another thing I need an education in. And I guess the tow truck driver was full of shit!! Can't trust anyone anymore !!

If voltage drops below 8 volts the PCM shuts down.
Also, it sounds as if the PCM isn't turning the fuel pump back on after engine start.
Power up the fuel pump prime circuit and see if it stays running.

Yes guys it is a engine swap. why it was attempted to be started to be assured no vats issues.

That 8volt thing easily could be the issue

my swap is complete z28 harness throughout car so that isn't the issue. Z28 ran fine as well.

So just run 12 volts to that wire and that should keep the fuel pump on?

Yes, it's how they prime the fuel system on the assembly line.
Hook it to the positive side of the battery.
Remember to disconnect it after you're done testing.

Make sure you have all vacuum lines hooked up.

When I put my new engine in, started it and it ran for about 5 seconds also. Turns out I didn't put the brake booster line on and it kept dying.

excellent call, I am not sure if I hooked that up, but only other line not known to be hooked up is the evap line that is bundled with the fuel lines.

thanks will check that out now.

Okay I have 2 red wires off my battery cable. I know where they both go however which one goes where. They are same length however they differ in gauge size.

this is the larger wire

smaller one, just want to be sure which went where
