Can't control oil pressure?

Hi, my name is Justin, I recently got a 3.8L 1999 Firebird and there is a rod knocking so I'm pretty sure I need a new engine. As far as the oil pressure goes, I'll start the car and let it set there. After about 7 minutes the oil pressure starts dropping and by about 10 minutes it redlines and I kill it. It's not the sending unit or the gauges as far as I know of... Also when I rev it, it starts smoking near the drivers side. My dad thinks that is electrical.

Welcome Justin. When you have excessive clearance between your bearings and crankshaft [which will cause your knock] it directly affects your oil pressure. The more clearance the less oil pressure You will need to tear your engine apart and rebuild it or get a new engine. If you are planning on rebuilding the engine that is in the car I wouldn't be running it much more. You will be doing more damage to it..

Thank you, I am planning on upgrading to a 5.3L. It came off of my dads 2003 Z71 Silverado when he put a 6.0L in it. All it needs are new rings so I'm looking to get that rebuilt, could you tell me what I'd need to upgrade if I were to pull the V6 and put in the 5.3L V8?
