firebird surges at idle

i have a 98 firebird v6 3.8

when i start the car the idle surges for about 30 seconds. I think it might be the throttle position sensor. when im actually driving it goes away and it doesnt do it when i come to stops either. just the initial start up.

For future reference, please don't post the same question in two separate areas it creates clutter.

Are you throwing any codes?

I would take it to an Autozone or some other parts shop. They will scan your car for free. If it's throwing codes it will be much easier to diagnose, you also wouldn't be playing as much of a guessing game as to what's wrong.

p0102 thats the only code the car gave. right now the check engine light only comes on after driving for a while. but then it goes off if i let her cool down.

so il try cleaning the MAF once the engine isnt hot and see if the check engine light persists.

Yeah, if that's the only code you're getting then there's a 99.9% chance it's your MAF. Try cleaning it with MAF cleaner like affliction suggested.

YO man,, I have same year and motor, It is your maf sensor if cleaning doesn work replace it,, I cleaned mine for a long time and cars ran fine that annoying reving at start up,, I bought a maf sensor from the dealer years ago and never needed it,, but it sure came in handy when I swaped it a couple months ago, didn't have to pay 300 bucks cause already had it and it did the trick !!!

Take the MAF out, use something like this.

CRC/Mass air flow sensor cleaner (05110) | | AutoZone.com
