You can better locate the sound by using a piece of pvc pipe held upto your ear. Be careful to not get it into the moving parts. Move it from area to are until you find the sound. Kinda like a stethiscope.
Start with the simple stuff, for $20 you can replacet he serpentine belt, could just be that the belt is wearing out after 13 years and is causing that sound. From there I say check the alternator, $40 for the part on ebay.
good luck on finding your problem, does your belt feel loose any at all, I was thinking like FirebirdPhil, belt, maybe belt tensioner spring fixing to go. :dunno:
my dads 91 ford escort started doing that and It was because the cover on the timing chain got bent and it was taping against it I don't think thats the problem but you should check it out.
yeah, it was the idler pulley, wasn't sure at first when I bought it. but on the way home the old flew out form underneath the car, the belt manage to grab the bearing, what was left and keep running until I got here home..
old pulley
new one
and yes I 'm going to change the lower one and belt when I get paid..
fbodyrs96, what did it sound like?? Mine started making a noise today, kinda quite at first, know it's kinda louder. Sounds like Christmas aluminum foil wadded up in your hand while you open and close. Kinda a crinkling noise. Is that what yours did??
ok, i'm in full blown panic mode right now, taking it to shop in morning. It started today, kinda quite, then got louder thourout the day, so a buddy said put a little belt dressing on it, I did, just 2 little squirts, cranked it up and it got louder, so I cut it off. When you race engine it gets quite.
now mine got louder when the motor was being rev ed, i can't remember what it's called but the ls1 is famous for make a sound until the car warms up..check www.ls1tech.com somebody there should be able to help, hope you find your problem quicker than I did....
