SES flashing wont start

Greetings

I have a 97 Firebird 3.8l had it for a few months and all of a sudden when you try and start it the check engine light flashes quickly, with the key in run position, and the car will turn over but not start. Eventually and seemingly random the light will stop flashing and stay on then it starts right up. Thought it may be the VATS but the security light does not flash and the key has been missing the resistor since I got the car. Been searching and have not found anything like it so I thought I would see if anyone here has?

Thanks Don

If there's no chip in the key and the engine starts and runs, I would suspect that the PO did the VATS bypass with a resistor.

As for a flashing SES, that usually indicates and issue with the engine that will damage the catalytic converter.

Its not a VATS issue. An issue with VATS wouldn't let it turn over.

If SES flashes it usually means there's a misfire.

You need to scan the PCM for codes.

Its a relay behind the kick panel where the hood release is located, does anyone know what its for, may be ABS since the module is close by?

The fuel pump relay is located there.
Stuff ABS power related is in the ABS module IIRC.

Ok went a got 2 new relays and it does the same thing. What would make the relay just tick rapidly then engage after 5 - 10 mins? Also it is getting worse and taking longer to engage.

Take it to a dealer and have them hook up the tech two scanner.
It will tell you exactly what is happening.

Bad ground for what?
A flashing SES is a random misfire indication or an issue that can harm the converter.
I would start by having the ICM tested, several times to ensure it is heated up.

the ses doesnt flash when its running only when the relay is not engaging, I think a bad ground was causing it to not engage because i cleaned up the battery and body ground and seems to be fine so far. The ses flashing seems to be secondary to the main problem.
