starter maybe?

ok so ive been putting a lot of work under the hood of my 94 camaro 3.4l and i finally finished everything i needed to do to get it running. when i was putting everything back together i completely forgot to put the alternator in. the car started up and i drove it up and down the block a few times and it gave me some trouble when it was firing up. i got it home and relised the rookie mistake i made and put the alternator back in the car and i took the battery to walmart and got it exchanged for a new one. after all that i try to start my car and i get nothing. all the interior lights come on, the radio and the headlights work too but when turn the key all the way the started does nothing, it wont even click. i tried tapping it and i checked my connections and they are all fine. i was just wondering if my guess about the starter being shot is true and if was because i was driving it without the alternator

Is the security light on?
If so, try the BCM key chip relearn procedure.

Turn the key to run only.
Leave it in Run for a minimum of 10 minutes.
Turn it off, remove key, reinsert, try to start.

If the security is the issue the light will either stay on steady or flash at you. If the security light is going off then the odd are it not security issue.

Do you hear any noise at all when you turn the key?

Before you replace the starter, use a screwdriver and jump the two connections on the starter itself.
You'll have to be under the car.
If the starter engages, the problem is either the electrical ignition switch on the steering column under the dash, or a bad start enable relay.
