Temperature maxes after 5 min idling

Hi guys, new to the forums, been trying to find a place that could answer a problem for my sons 93 Camaro V6. It has 73k miles, last week when he was driving it to the store, the check gauge light came on, and then it started running really rough and then died.
he was only 4 miles from home, and i took him to get it and bring it back home so i could look at it. from his description i thought maybe a bad spark plug or wire. So after I checked the wires and the spark plugs and couldn't find anything wrong with it, we went online to search for an answer.

From other descriptions we thought maybe it was fuel pressure regulator, drove it up to Oreilly's to see if they had a fuel pressure tester and they didnt. but the guy noticed air intake sensor was broken and we replaced that and the car cranked up and sounded good but..
we started seeing smoke and was looking around and the guy realized it was steam. The tube that goes from the manifold on the passenger side to the air intake was hot as hell and stean was coming out of it, then the check gauge light came on, the water temp gauge went all the way into the red and then the car shut off.

So he called a buddy of his that works in a shop and that guy said he thinks the head gasket is cracked and letting water into it. the oil was a slurry color that looked more like coffee then clean oil.

So does this sound right or could this just be a case where the thermostat is gone bad and causing this?
I dont really have another 1 or 2k to put in this car after just paying cash for it 2 months ago.
any ideas, suggestions, thoughts or just plain bad news?
thanks for reading, tried to supply all information as i wrote this up.

With it majorly over heating and the caramel looking oil, my guess its a head gasket.

ok so anyone have an idea on how much it would cost to replace a head gasket or is the engine a loss?

are you going to be doing the work, or someone else? makes a big difference on price.
could be anywhere from 400 (you) to up to 2grand (shop)

just guessing though.
