The smaller one goes to the alternator. To charge the battery. And is also 1 of the "big 3" to upgrade.

The wire that goes from the alt to battery is one of the big 3, yes. But, you "don't have to replace" that wire. You "can" replace it, but just adding one is easier. You can just add another (bigger) one. Electricity follows the path of least resistance. Which would be the bigger cable (wire). The other 2 upgrades are the ground from the battery to the vehicle chassis and the ground from the block to vehicle chassis.

Yes. Should be the same wire. Is a 1 wire alt. regulator is built in the alt.

No, the small wire in the plug in connector on the alternator comes from the ignition system and is the power source for the field windings,
They are two separate connections with two separate purposes.

You can't mix up the alternator connections.
The larger wire that goes to the battery, is mounted on a post with a nut, the other, the smaller wire, is a plug in connector and can only go in one place.

Alt wires should go 1 to ground, 1 to battery positive and 1 to the instrument/ gauge cluster.

That's what I'm thinking. Going by your pix.
The wire in the wire loom I'm guessing goes to the gauge cluster (second wire from the plug). The short wire coming from the plug is a ground and the other wire in your pix goes to the battery + ??
