Question Problems after a B&M Shift kit install...

In My 1988 GTA I put a shift kit in the 700R4. It was shifting horribly from 1-2 and then the 3 shift was goofy. Found the 1-2 spring was broken in three pieces so there was one of the problems.

Got the kit installed... not to bad a job but more than a few hours to do it. Anyhow took it out for a test drive... WOW the 1-2 shift it's almost impossible to not get a small chirp from the rear wheels and under power it will break them loose... the 2-3 shift is pretty nice also... however the 3-4 shift is never happening. Also if you're not accelerating somewhat increasingly, the 2-3 shift will take a very long time... if you hold the throttle under 2000 rpm it won't shift into 3rd for darn near a quarter of a mile... then the 3-4 just never takes place...ran it up to 100 MPH and still no shift.

Called B&M and all they will say is check the pressures... I asked if they are off then what? There answer is to adjust the TV cable... I've done that already.

Can anyone shed any light on this? Hate to take it all apart again if I don't have to.

Thanks in advance,

Robert

I did the self adjust, where you pressin the button and move the thingy back toward the passenger compartment... then go full throttle to set it.

It sure sounds like the tranny thinks the engine is at WOT.
I'd try the adjustment again, maybe with a helper.
When my 86 needed adjusting, the mech had me hold it at WOT while he adjusted it.

No matter what I do to the cable it shifts the same... even if I remove it completely from the throttle it still shifts the same... which tells me that somehow when I was putting it back together I got the little wire thingy to fall out of the hole where it bolts onto the throttle body.

See when I first went to test drive it the TV cable was stuck... that was my first thought and when I asked the B&M guy he said if it had come unhooked inside the tranny it wouldn't shift at all.

my other symtom that I told him was that when under 2500 rpm if I moved the shifter from O to D it would downshift to 2nd gear.... all this tells me that I'm not connected to the TV cable inside the tranny.

Thanks for your help!!! this has allowed me to narrow it down to the true cause.

Robert

To further elaborate... when you put the shifter in 1st gear instead of D or O it ignores the TV cable and will automatically shift into 2nd even though its in 1st gear and it's a power shift... which is what is happening for 2 and 3rd... and when you slow down it will down shift back into 1st if you don't ever move the lever to 2 or D or O.

Since the TV isn't connected inside the tranny the shifts are taking place like they do when you leave the shifter in 1st.

Agree?

Pulled the pan today and found that during the reinstall I had somehow bent the TV bracket so the TV couldn't come out all the way. Fixed that thinking all would be well now... isn't... still basically the same problem. Tried the TV adjustment with closed throttle and with WOT no difference either way and still no 4th gear. Actiully its still shifting the exact same way... won't go into 2nd gear unless rev's are higher than 2800 RPM... even if I go up to 2500 and let it idle it won't shift into 2nd.

so, I pulled everything apart, got the tcc filter back where it belonged and its back shifting normal... one thing I don't like is how quickly it shifts into 2nd gear, when normally accelerating it hits 2nd at 2200rpm... how can I change this?
