Okay. First, i have an AUTO 1990 rs... I just replaced my dash cluster with another that seems to be from a manual.. When im driving, the shift light keeps coming on. Anyway to fix this? Or just pull the bulb since ill never need that light?

Do you mean the Skip Shift light?
Skip Shift didn't start in F-bodies until 1993 and the T-56 trannies.
Curious as to you got a 4th gen cluster into a 3rd gen?

Or are you talikng about something different.

In my brothers 5-Speed Dodge Dakota, his instrument cluster has an orange upwards-facing arrow that comes on when he needs to upshift. Maybe manual tranny 3rd Gens had something similar?

Isn't that the whole point behind a tach?

Yeah there pretty useless. Although for cruising around you should be shifting based on speed not the tach

It was when the automatics started really taking over as the transmission of choice.
Manufacturers put this light in there to "tell" you when to shift if you had the manual variety. Silly, but was there.
I normally shift on sound, but that takes a little while to learn. Didn't have a shift light in Slowass, and rarely looked at the tach.

Remove the bulb.

This.
When i first learned stick i went based on the speedo. Now i never have to look down. I go by the feel of the motor more than sound. I cant always hear the motor on the 4cylinder lol

The only vehicle I ever found a shift light useful was on my bike. It was so easy to climb through the gears I had my shift light set to 12k RPM's when the redline was 15.5k, it was just to help me be sure that I was aware of how high I was revving it.

wtf, how do you know when you're at the redline? Even cars that are manual with no tach don't make any sense to me, that's like missing a key component to a manual vehicle. My tach on my bike was the most prominent part of the 'dash'.

My old Elantra was a 5 speed with no tach, and no shift light. I had to shift off of speed, which I learned the hard way by accidentally redlining a couple times.

My buddy had a 5 speed Ford Focus with no tach, it had a shift light. And another friend used to have a 5 speed 95 Aero which had a tach and a shift light. They are absolutely useless.

^ This is why the light is there. If you follow the light the gas mileage will be close to what the window sticker says it will be otherwise people would run it up to rev line then shift, even in normal driving, and of couse doing it that way you wouldnt even be close to the gas milage the window sticker says. Its in the owners maunal somewhere.
