steering column

There is a rod that runs along the lock selector and down threw the column to a switch, what's it do?

It goes to the ignition switch , as the key rotates in the barrel it pushes the rod down the switch through accessories to ign and start

Should've mentioned that the ign switch is located further down the column at the end of the rod you speak of.
I must point out that I am not totally sure about any of this but I'm sure someone will give you a more accurate description of what you need to know.

There is also a rod that goes to the high beam switch
