what is this?

I was taking off the ac compressor today and I was moving wires around and a really small one leading to this snapped off. So I was wondering what this is? What's it do? Do I need it?

I really suggest you buy a shop manual before you mess up your car. they are well worth the money and will teach you a lot

I have the Chilton manual...I totally didn't even think of looking in there lol

Thanks guys. I thought that's what it was.

So do I even need it? Could I remove it? I'm really working on cleaning up the engine bay so I'd like to get rid if all emission crap and stuff I don't need

copied n pasted from 3rdgen.org
I have an 86 iroc and never dealt with a vapor canister before. I have a few questions i hope someone can answer for me.
1. what is it main purpose?
The main purpose is to help ellimit fuel vapors from your fuel tank. The fuel tank is a pressure system, And some pressure is needed to help with fuel delivery.
2. Does it have an adverse affect on performance?
Yes it will have a bad affect on performance. It'll end up making your car run like garbage
3. Can you remove it?
Yes you can but its not recommended.
4. If you can remove it how?
There is NO SAFE WAY to remove this.
5. are there any potential risks in removing it? Well yes there is some very big risk if you remove it. One you will over heat your fuel pump if its an electric in tank pump. If you doen't properly vent your tank you'll produce to much vapor and pressure in your tank. And it could explode That is why it designed the way it is. The charcoal cannister uses engine vacuum to releave vapor pressure threw the purge valve. The system always keeps some pressure in the system. And lets not forget its not legal.

you could relocate it to somewhere else if you want to decluter the engine bay.
