98 camaro z28 advice??

I have the opportunity to purchase a 98 camaro z28 with 150k for 1500. The car was wrecked but only damaged the fascia and passenger fender, airbags were not deployed at all and title is still clean, the guy has the fascia and fender all it needs is painted. Interior is about a 7/10 and clear coat is fading/peeling on some areas. It is midnight blue and the only other issue is the engine is starting to knock. I ran the car fax cause I work at a chevy dealership so I get that for free and it's had 9 previous owners. Came from California to Nevada to Illinois and now in Indiana which is where I'm located. I have a couple people saying no that it's dumb but they aren't camaro fans anyways so kinda don't wanna listen to them. Any advice? Should I take it? It does not come with the cragars unfortunately it has gto wheels but I have camaro wheels at home so that's not a problem, any input is greatly appreciated thanks Click image for larger version

It has a knock? That is not a good sign. I say no! Pass on it. Even for $1,500, with it having a knock, chances are it will need an engine rebuild. LS1's are not cheap to rebuild. I know from experience. By the time you had everything repaired with new paint, you could be looking at $7-8k invested in it. Is that something you had planned on?

Doing the work yourself could save a lot of money. And ..... could make it worth the purchase. If, you can and are willing.

I bought mine for 2500 and am nearing 6500 into it. I bought the car aware and willing to put money into it. I will say though. The best question to ask yourself is if you have the patience to deal with it. It's easier said than done.

Yeah, try and see if you can get the seller to reduce it to $1,000.

BTW: This color (which is the same color as mine) is Navy Blue Metallic, not midnight blue. Just an FYI.

I guess the other question is what if I decide to replace the ls1? Would it be cheaper to rebuild it or replace it?

Send a message via AIM to 96firephoenix
If that is located in the southeast corner of Marion county, I used to drive past it every day. it's been sitting like that for at least 4 months... I'd pass for over $1000.

Replace with a new one or with one out of a junkyard replace?

Junkyard engines are about $40/cylinder in Indy and may still need rebuilt.

New one is gonna be $$$.

I would lowball for $750 because you already know it's gonna be about $4k to get a good motor for it and he's not gonna do it. And how long before the transmission needs replaced too?

Same ^
I bought mine for $1700 and I've put about $4k into it so far. Still not done yet. Maybe look at a nicer one at a higher price to avoid the headache. I should have waited and found one for $5k that actually ran

You can always buy a 5.3 from a GM truck and swap the LS accessories, thats a lot cheaper to do than rebuild or buy another LS1
