Just bought a 1998 Firebird Formula(love the car)and the service engine light came on.I took it to my mechanic which is also my best friend and the code is Long fuel trim bank 1 & 2. We went over the pcv system and all of the vacum lines and can"t find anything wrong yet. I replced the o2 sensor for bank1 because the first code said running lean bank 1, I also replaced the fuel filter. but that didn't fix it.The original owner put on a slp ram air filter box with K&N filter. I don't know if anything else has been done. I am still trying to track down the original owner from the dealership. Any ideas would be great.
It's likely the o2 sensors are faulty or going bad. It is a P0171 code, right? If so, replace the other manifold o2 sensor, clear the code, and drive it around for a bit. Let me know...
I replaced the O2 sensor for bank 1 (drivers side) on sunday, and cleared the code, the light came back on after about 10 minnutes. I will try the other side and let you know.
Replaced the other O2 sensor this morning and while we were at it found one of the pcv fittings at the very back of the intake had a crack in it and that was more than likely where the problem was. I drove it for about a half hour and no engine light yet. Now I can start looking at a new exhaust system. No emision test in my area so the cat's will be gone soon! The car is way to quiet for me now,all of my friends give me crap about it LOL

Lucky... No cat will definitely open you up to some more sound, just dont go overboard with trying to impress your friends and get one of those ridiculously loud/annoying exhaust systems.
Cats are required by Federal law in all states and carry a hefty punishment if anybody notices. Just because you don't have emissions tests doesn't mean cats are not required... If you want to suprise your friends you can have an electric cutout put on and then open it up when they aren't expecting it.
well drove the car home last night and NO service light so all is good. About the exaust,By next spring I hope to have the car ready for autocros so federal law won't matter. The car will probably be strictly a track car and I will trailer it to the track.Which exaust will give me the best performance?? Any idea's?
Depends on your modifications... A set of longtubes (nothing huge like 1 7/8ths headers) in a true-dual setup going into Borla XR-1's should be good for the track. Header size/type will change depending on mods and power levels. Same goes for intake manifold - i.e. you wouldnt want to put a FAST 92 on a stock engine.
Also if you are going to be doing autocross/road racing, find out exactly which modifications on these cars changes your class so you don't do all the wrong mods and end up at the bottom of your class.
