New user! Few questions!

Hey all! I'm fixing to buy a 99-2002 ws6! So I had a few questions before pulling the trigger.
What year should I look out for? I just don't know the difference in years and what gm added to each one.
What are some common things I should look for when looking at the trans am?
Is the trans am pretty reliable? My current 2002 mustang gt is extremely reliable and I don't want to buy a trans am that will nickel and dime me to death!
Last, what are some good websites for mods?
Thanks in advance, and I look forward to growing closer to you guys after my purchase!!!

If you start modding, it can become a nickel and dime situation pretty quickly.
I would think anything around the 98-02 years would be that way right now, they are 10+ years old.

Well, an obvious choice would be 01-02, They would be newer of course. Stay clear of the 98's. 98's were the first Fbodys to get the LS1. GM deleted the EGR in the 01-02's and got the LS6 intake and SOME even got an LS6 block (because of short LS1 surplus ). Ask for maintenance records. You don't want one that was beat to death or not maintained properly.

Awesome 01/02 it is.
What if I buy from someone that doesn't have maintenance record? Are there certain things I could look for to see if it was beat on?

Basic checks. Engine for noises it should not be making. If 6 speed manual, check for clutch slippage. Auto trans, makes sure trans don't slip and shifts smooth. Fluids for contamination, brakes for wear, rotors for warpage. Interior for signs of neglect. The basic once overs. Just look the vehicle over very carefully.

Exhausts, performance, cosmetics, anything really.
Like for my mustang americanmuscle.com has literally everything I need for it in on place. Just wondering if there are any popular sites for f-bodies

Hawks third gen. Even tho its a 3rd gen site, they have parts for 4th gen's too. Summit Racing, JEGS, Year One (very expensive tho ) To name a few. This site even has sponsors. Which is a good source.

An Ls1 F-Body will likely do so because of age. Not sure how that didn't answer at least that....

As for mods, LMPerformance is a good one.
UMI for suspension is top notch.
Stay away from SLP.
Texas Speed, Thunder Racing, a few others.
Magnaflow is the only exhaust I will ever run on anything.

Nobody likes SpeedInc.?

I like Summit Racing, for lesser needed things, but I frequent Texas Speed and SpeedInc for major long lasting parts, when I and if I have the money to go that route.

I plan to give my wifes 5th gen a nice TSP full exhaust in the future. Great prices there, good reviews too.

Last resort, ebay or C-list! Shriek yes, but I've found some good used parts off there, good stuff from personally owned buyers. But risky, I have just as many horror stories from both sites.

Speed Inc. is solid as well. Livernois as well.
There are several top notch shops.

Really, as long as you avoid SLP and maybe COSpeed, you should be fine. The owner of COSpeed came to this site and attacked me. SLP called me a liar over the phone, when in fact I was just trying to get them to back a part.

I had a bad time with GMMG. I paid (stupidly) $750 for their dual chambered exhaust, and it took 6 weeks to ship, because of so-called materials back order. The communication was horrible, and for my troubles I got a free GMMG shirt. .

And after it all, the exhaust was a pain to install, required bends in places it shouldn't have, and it still vibrates the chassis at times. I didn't even bother trying to send it back, I just considered it a lesson learned.
