Rear swap questions

I apologize if this has been posted. I searched and didn't found too many conflicting answers. I currently have 3.08 gears but am buying my buddy's old rear with 3.42s and LSD. I know this will throw off the speedometer, but my question is: will it throw off the tachometer as well? I have read/heard ppl saying different things, so I could really use advice from someone with experience and I have the money for a rear, but not the tune yet which is why I'm asking. Thanks!

It will throw he speedometer off not the tach, but if you have an auto Trans you will need a tune to drive the car. The shift points will be off or it won't shift at all with the gear change.

It should, they'll just tune it for whatever gears you tell them are in it now.

Can someone tell me if this is the correct ECM? I'd prefer to send another out so I could drive my car in the mean time and this one is pretty cheap

PCMforless can send you one with the new tune on it, and then you send back your old PCM as a core, or at least last time I checked they offered it.

Alright I need some help big time because I'm confused. Here's my story:

About three years ago (before I knew anything about cars), my rear broke and I had it replaced at a local shop.

I now have my buddy work on my car, and he said my gears are a 3.08 with no LSD.

I just recently read about the y87 package, and I have the RPO code on my door. My question is, if it has the code, is it definitely a y87? And if it is, what affect would that have on my car after this long of having the wrong gears? Also, I have an automatic tranny

Edit: it does have g80 and gu6 code

Yeah but my issue now is that the shop replaced my 3.42 gears with 3.08 gears and am not sure if it could do any damage to anything

Changing gears isn't going to hurt anything.

Eff 3 grand you could have gotten a beefed up strong *** rear end for that much. I wouldn't say that 3.08 is worse gear, it gives you a higher top speed
