Ring and Pinion Install

Here’s a write up of my 4.10 ring and pinion gear, and gov. locker install

After a little bit of reading it seems that most people tend to leave installing a ring and pinion gear to the professionals. If you can afford it then this is probably the best way to go. But it’s not impossible to do this install yourself although it does require patience and a few expensive tools which I will cover as we go.

Approx install time: at least 10 hours. Be prepared to spend more though.

Parts necessary to complete install:

  • Ring and pinion (they are made at the factory in pairs you cannot mix and match)
  • Install kit including gear marking compound, shims, bearings, and races is recommended
  • Rear main seal recommended
  • Differential cover gasket or black RTV
  • Gear oil (and limited slip additive if needed)

Tools you’ll need to complete this install:

  • Enough jack stands/ramps to hold the car safely. (I used 4 stands and 2 ramps)
  • Jack to raise the car (preferably a floor jack)
  • Mallet
  • Bungee cords (to hold break calipers)
  • Oil catch can
  • Pry bar
  • 3′ breaker bar (highly recommended, they come on sale at harbor freight for $15)
  • Vice or press
  • Harmonic balancer puller (can be rented from napa)
  • Accurate inch lb tork wrench
  • Combination of sockets and wrenches
  • 1 1/4″ (must be socket)
  • 21mm
  • 19mm
  • 18mm
  • 16mm
  • 15mm
  • 13mm
  • 8mm (must be wrench)
