was the first year of the Camaro. The Camaro was obviously a response to the success of the Ford Mustang from 1965 and 1966. Ford began coining the Mustang a “Pony car” (A smaller, more compact car, with a small V8) and the Camaro was also added into this category. The Camaro and Mustang would become one of the most involved rivalries of the late 1960’s, and were all the way until the Camaro was discontinued after 2002, but the recent 2009 Camaro has renewed the crosstown Detroit rivalry. The Camaro was based off of the soon arriving Nova, but redesigned to be smaller, lighter, and more agile. It sat on a unibody chassis, complete from the firewall back with a steel subframe for the front end. The 1967 came in both Coupe and Convertible styles, and had almost 80 different options.
One of the main packages was the RS. With upgraded cosmetics, like the famous hidden headlights along a blacked out grill, different taillights, interior and RS emblems. For the more speed inclined buyers, the SS package was the way to go. The SS package had a 350cid V8 as well as an upgrade to a 396cid V8 (L35) rated at 325 horsepower. Later, a more tuned 375 horsepower option was available along with a stripe surrounding the front end of the car (nicknamed a bumblebee stripe) and a more aggressive hood.
