About ICM and optispark

Good evening,

I'm rather new to Camaro's. A few weeks ago I received a 93 Camaro 3.4 sfi L32 engine and I have been doing some reading and research since then.

For what I see I ended up with the "Cinderella" version, however I don't care much since it was a gift from an old dear relative and I really like the car all in all, no matter the engine.

This car says it's 93 and doesn't have optispark, just ICM and the three coil pack (which I am glad for).

There's very little information about the L32 engine on the net but plenty about other Camaro's engines.

For what I've been reading 93 engines (and some later ones too) were still using Optispark.

So I wonder: Why, if this car came with the most basic engine, was factory equipped with a superior ignition system ? (Superior to optispark in my view)

If anyone could enlighten me I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks for reading !!

First, Welcome to The Zone !!!

Optispark is on the V8 (LT1) cars. The 3.4 is the V6. 1993 Was also the first 3.4 is an f-body.

The LT1 V8 was still based on the old 350 V8 with cap and rotor distributor, and it was easier to make the optispark setup than to completely redesign the engine around the superior coil plug system. That was done in the complete re-design with the LS series v8, which I think has the (even more superior) coil-on-plug setup.
