Series 2 & 3 axles

I have a series 3 rearend with a bent axle. I'm on my way to the local salvage yard tomorrow to find a replacement. Are the axles the same in a series 2 & 3 rearend? How do you tell from the outside if it is a 2 or 3?
Thanks in advance

no, you'd have to know what gear ratio is on it, i belive 3.23's and numberically lower gears get the series 2, anything higher gets series 3

2.73(GU2) & 3.08(GU4) = 2 series carrier
3.23(GU5) & 3.42(GU6) = 3 series carrier
