I am Saying it "could" be the key. If the metal tabs in the chip in the key are warn, then yes, That is the possible cause. Only way to know for sure is to get a new coded key. if it works, then that was the issue, if it doesn't work, then it is something else. The blinking security light IS a VATS issue tho.
Keep in mind, the VATS and keyless entry are 2 separate systems. IF you have keyless entry and works. If you have keyless entry and it works, this protects entry of the vehicle. Just a basic door entry protection with horn honk, which needs to be disabled by a key-fob or turn the ignition on with the key.
The VATS is an ignition enable/disable system.
