Question 4 Quick questions (thermostat, heatercore, knock sensor, rear defroster)

just got my 98 3.8. Decided to clean it up as much as I can tomorrow. just have a few quick questions
1. new thermostat, ( heard something about a 180 deg one is better?)
2. flush/cleaning coolant system, radiator has orange stuff in it ( planning on backwashing the heater core cause i think its clogged resulting in no heat, anything i could let sit in there to eat up some gunk?)

3. also getting pretty bad mpg, heard knock sensor might have something to do with it. Is it worth the 25 bucks on ebay to put a new one in?
4. last question was about my rear defroster. i push the button on the dash and the button doesnt stay in and nor does the led light come on and the rear glass grates dont work it seems, any troubleshooting advice on that?

180 yes

tune-up

check fuse and relay to defrost, also check to see if the switch is still plugged in.

if I'm not mistaken, that 'orange stuff' in your radiator is Dexcool ... it's what you should be using in these cars

On the coolant system, if you flush it, replace the hoses and just put the green stuff in. Dexcool ( orange stuff) wasn't made to contact ambient air pressures like in our recovery tanks and will sludge up. in the newer systems where is all pressurized, is great stuff.

What do you consider bad mpgs?

The knock sensor and the knock sensor module manage timing. If the knock sensor detects pinging ( fuel pre-ignition ) it will retard the timing until the pinging stops.
If the module fails the timing will never be properly advance ad fuel mileage will Really suffer.

Been there done that and it was a bitch to figure out because a failed module will Not set a SES light

the cooler the engine is, the more power.
the hotter the engine is, the better MPG's it will get.

Depending how much $ you have, to me, anything under 100$ is worth trying, hit or miss. But that's just me. But i also don't know anything about that sensor.

I have the same problem with the rear defrost, i light doesn't go on and i can't tell if it's been pushed (is it suppose to stay in slightly?) i never had to use it so I'm not to worried about that now, nor do i know if it still works. If you find info on that, let me know.

as for MPG, i just filled up my 3.8L, not 100% full but the needle was showing full (But still had room for more...) I did about ~440km(275miles) highway and had about just under 1/4 tank left. I've done my tune up recently. (plugs, air filter, PCV sensor, throttle body cleaning, 3x O2 sensors replaced, etc).i think we have 16.5Gallon tanks, after doing the math, i think i'm around 22mpg Highway....hmmm

not for a V6, it would have to be tuned for it to even come close to running right.
