Auto shifting to early?

So this weird thing started happening to my 3.8 firebird. When I'm driving it seems like my car shifts into 4th gear way to early. It gets stuck around1500 rpms and requires a lot of gas to speed it up. Any info on how to fix this is appreciated!

It's not stuck at 1500 RPM, it's just in overdrive if you're doing 55-70 which is normal for these cars.

65 MPH is 1600 + - RPM for me.

same here. OD uses very minimal gas and is the lowest gear. i have to give it 50% throttle to goto 3rd

haha alright then. So that IS normal. thought something was ****y for a minute.

I do hold one question. If driving in D not OD, ill go stop to 1st. then 2nd then 3rd, and after im in 3rd sometime it seems to "drop a gear" or go lower in the rpms. does OD kick in at some point by its self? even if not in OD

This. At certain speeds vs throttle position it will lock.

Torque converter locks? How about that. I've wondered since I was 16 (i.e. how long I've had the Camaro/12 years) how my RPMs could drop without me changing speeds.

Would that have anything to do with the RPMs rising before it goes into OD as well? I've noticed if I switch from D to OD while I'm already at OD speeds (45+ MPH) the engine will rev for a second before settling down, without me pressing any harder or softer on the pedal.

Because the converter unlocks for the shift and then relocks.

With the 4l60e auto trans you should just keep it in OD. You get better mpgs when in OD, and when I tested at the drag strip I ran the same times in D or OD so no advantage there either.
