my 3.8 is knocking, but has good oil pressure??

Hey there, my little V6 is knocking, not sure why, the sounds seems to come from everywhere...

towards the end of the video you can hear it, as the engine starts to warm up

Any ideas on what might be wrong?? something is telling me a stuck lifter...

All I hear is a whine, that sounds like a power steering pump low on fluid or on it's last leg.

I can kinda hear something but maybe if you fix the power steering pump first it would be a lot easier to help you out. How is the oil level in the engine?

Time to pull it. Lifter will make fast ticking noise. Yours sounds like the bottom end.

I have a 97 that made horrible knocking noise, had great oil pressure but here was how the engine was when pulled. Get on top of it because when a 3.8 eats bearings they will self destruct fast.

Yes in case you were wondering the motor ran like this, No the pistons rod that broke wasn't seized, no it never saw boost or nitrous.

Good luck ... Take a prybar and try and move the harmonic balancer front to back and see if it moves, thrust bearings will make a 3.8 knock.

If I take the motor out to rebuild it, I may as well throw in a cam, and higher ratio rockers

And headers and exhaust and a tune, because otherwise the cam is almost useless

Don't buy any engine kits until the motor is torn down...that knock can mean you need a wide variety of new items; including (but not limited to) crank, rods, mains, lifters, maybe a new block...at the very least all those things should be machined properly...

It's about to get expensive up in here...

I bought this 3.8 from a wrecked 96 firebird for 700.00. I think it had been rebuilt prior to the crash, been a pretty good engine. Got it off ebay and drove to the seller ( a wrecking yard ) and heard the motor run and did a coolant pressure and cylinder compression test before it was removed. Have had it now 10k miles. Think you would be hard pressed to rebuild a 3800 for 700.00, I looked at rebuilt long blocks and they ranged from 1700-2600

why they painted it orange? Who knows!

The hose should be the same regardless of the clamps. And obviously, you can buy replacement hoses at any local parts store.

you can buy the expensive kit or go to junk yard and find a 80's-90's front drive 3.8 and they have them.
