LB9 V8 1985-1992 5.0L 305cid TPI [email protected] [email protected]
L98 V8 1987-1992 5.7L 350cid TPI [email protected] [email protected]

Fun Facts:

*LB9 featured from 1991-1992 was rated at a significantly different HP/TQ than that of the previous 1985-1990 version, clocking in at [email protected], making it just as powerful as the 1987-1988 L98's.

*The L98 was never mated with an M5 transmission.

*Choo Choo Customs, recently bought out by Conversion Van Company 'LA West', created several distinct and rare cars over the course of 1986-1992 known as the Pro/Am-I, Pro/Am-II, Bandit I, and Bandit II. No modifications were done to the drivetrain, but appearance was highly altered. Pro/Am's received a non-functional cowl hood, Razzi Body kit, aftermarket wheels, wood-grain trim interior, and two-tone paint. The Bandits received a limited# golden name plate, Razzi Body kit, Shaker Hood Scoop, and a "Smokey the Bandit" 2nd gen Firebird hood decal. Only 500 Pro/Am's were created each year between 1986 and 1989, and 500 Bandit's had been made each year between 1991 and 1992. They only converted Formula's. (I know this stuff cuz I once owned a Pro/Am-I )

*In 1982, 'Trans Am Specialties' of Cherry Hill, NJ, produced a "Bandit" model based on Burt Reynold's 'Smokey the Bandit'.

*In 1983 and 1984, 'Mecham Racing' of Arizona offered a 'Mecham Motor Sports Edition' (MSE) Trans Am.

*The Firebird/Camaro was about to lose its wings and bowtie in 1987. But instead, GM cancelled the "GM80 Program", which had the goal of developing a plastic-bodied, front wheel drive car to replace the F-body.

About that quote for the FWD Third Gens, I heard that the in 81 they were thinking of making the new gen a FWD platform, not switching it up mid generation...

You missed big time on the MR MSE's

They were manufactured from 1982-1985 (I have an '82) and they came with all sorts of different things to pick from, standard tho was the aero-wing and the aero front spoiler (which I am missing) along with a leather wrapped steering wheel, 4-or-5spd trans missions, WS6 package, and a dash applique and also an applique on center console noting the number of the car and the year (mine is # 62 of 500 built in 82)

Heres an article directly from thirdgen.org: (its still missing a few things)

"These cars were created from '82 - '85 by Dennis Mecham, of DKM Macho T/A fame. He started Mecham Racing Inc. (MR) located in Glendale AZ and Tacoma WA. MSE stoof for Motor Sports Edition. The '82 models were a two tone paint scheme (split just below the doors at the rocker panel) with several colors combos to choose from. The '83, '84, and '85 models were painted similar to the 1984 15th Anniversary Trans Am with a two tone paint scheme split at the bodyline or middle of the doors. MSEs got a full width front spoiler, a low resistance "aerotail" rear spoiler, and emblems proclaiming it a Mecham Racing Machine. On the sail panels behind the doors are either MSE emblems or a big olive branch-wreathed letters MR, with Mecham Racing, USA, and SCCA champions underneath. There may be additional numbers/emblems on the drivers side headlight door, fenders, rear spoiler, or rear bumper depending on the year. MSEs also got special MR centercaps and a MR hood emblem. 500 were built in '82, 150 in '83, 50 in '84, and only a few in '85.
The stock 305 ci engine got a recurved distributor, advanced timing, and a rebuilt performance carb all good for about 25 HP. All cars came with a "Git Kit" in the rear hatch area which included a 600 Holley carb, aluminum intake manifold, Mallory distributor, Coil spark plug wires, Champion spark plugs, low restriction air cleaner, Tri-Y headers, and Y-pipe. Some cars were came fitted with a non-EGR Edelbrock intake manifold, Tri-Y headers, Doug Nash 5-speed, and a rebuilt Q-Jet or Holley 600 carb. Some even received an entire engine transplant that included a 440 horsepower 406 ci Chevy small block with various available performance combos, including a twin turbo for export use.
All MSEs came with the WS6 performance package from the factory, but a "Tallon Suspension" was optional with stiffer springs, urethane sway bar bushings, additional front cross member, Koni adjustable shocks, rear droop limiter straps, Firestone tires on Modern Wheel 15" x 7" alloys or special "Diamond-spoke" alloy rims. This suspension was capable of .90 to .95g on the skidpad. Inside included a "Duesenberg-like" leather-wrapped steering wheel (with MR insert), Motorola sound system, 160+ MPH speedometer, 8000+ RPM tach (both with MR Logos), Recaro seats, and dash or console plaque."
