Here in Alaska there are no gun restrictions. While i am probably going to trade my m1 carbine for more pressing needs, in the not so long run i now have the freedom to scratch build to my heart's content. I think one of the things i will try early on is make a carbon fiber framed handgun and see how lightweight i can get it while still being strong and reliable.

.......................You know that federal restrictions still apply, right? You can't just legally make your own gun without jumping through a lot of hoops.

Upon research, I find that I was very mistaken, and most of the barriers are state-imposed... or on making a firearm to sell - I think that is what I was thinking of.

There are still a couple restrictions though:

Whether or not you can make guns and what features you can or can't have are separate matters. There are more things to follow than making a gun visible to metal detectors.

One interesting thing unique to Alaska is that hb-69, which was passed in to law a few years ago made enforcing federal gun laws in Alaska a class c felony. Probably won't ever mater in my case.

yea... I was definitely mistaken on what restrictions there are.

That Alaska law sounds like it probably won't stand up in court. The supremacy clause of the constitution makes it void:
Quote:
This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States ... shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding.
Learn something every day, I guess.

The exact opposite is true. That bill was presented on the grounds that it is Washington violating the constitution, not Alaska and it's true. SB69 is just an official measure to uphold it. The authors of the bill stated this very blatantly. In a way it's an act of civil cold war.

You're right that the feds are violating the 2A on this issue, but I said it wouldn't hold up in court... not that it was wrong. On supremacy issues, the SCOTUS has almost always sided with the feds regardless of the constitutionality of the law in question.

AK is in the 9th circuit court. No way in hell the current 9C sides with Alaska on a pro-gun issue, and the SCOTUS is not about to weaken the federal govt's position with the current roster. Maybe if Scalia was still around, certainly if there were 5 like him on the court, but there aren't.

There's a whole boat load of laws that the feds have passed that violate the constitution (9th and 10th amendments mostly)

I'd love to see more states pass something like this, and basically force the 2A back on the feds, but until then we're kinda stuck with no-one wanting to be the "____" in "____ vs United States" and we all just wait, hoping that something changes.

The 9th circus can wine and cry all they want. That won't stop Alaska from throwing their agents in jail for trying to force this nonsense on us. Even IF the feds found ways to get their agents out of jail, i am pretty sure they all recognize that a little time in jail and a felony charge are above their pay grade. The general attitude towards guns here in Alaska is pretty relaxed. You see people walking around with guns on their hips all the time and no one cares. Yesterday i was in line behind a state trooper at a gas station with my .45 on my hip. We briefly had a joke discussion about the tv show. Not once did he even make note of the gun i was carying. It's just part of the landscape here.

Here's info on hb69
https://votesmart.org/bill/16210/42751#.WW5bmjqIY0M

So the felony is directly related to registration, capacity, accessories and the like. Basically it's a "you will go no further" bill.
