Roof rail weatherstrip retainer

I pulled these off the car before painting the car. They had some type of sticky sealer between them and the door jamb, almost looked like a tar base substance, which I cleaned and removed. I am now ready to reinstall these items but have not a clue what adhesive to use. Was this just a weatherstrip adhesive or some type of tape that was used?
